First look at who’s at Cloudspotting 2017

First look at who’s at Cloudspotting 2017

We are excited to break the news of our first line-up announcement for the 7th Cloudspotting Festival (28-30 July, 2017).

After winning last year’s ‘Audience Award’, it gives us great pleasure to elevate the music and showmanship genius that is HENGE to headline or main stage on Friday night.  A product of the planet of ‘Xylanthia’ – these mystical creators of their very own ‘Cosmic Dross’ genre, are busy recording their debut album and headlining Cloudspotting is something they are very excited by. Henge’s iconic frontman Zpor says “The human beings at Cloudspotting Festival were some of the most enlightened beings we have encountered on our Earth mission so far.  We danced together, we sang and clapped our hands.  All ages, united in one song.”

We are honoured to welcome international star quality with our Saturday night headliner BALOJI  for his only northern UK festival performance.  Baloji is a poet, composer-lyricist, scriptwriter and performer, video artist and stylist. Along with his full band, Baloji is an incredible live performer. His music stands at the crossroads of African music, incorporating traditional with soul, jazz and funk influences, discovered through sampling and electronic music which has its roots in the region of Belgium where Baloji grew up. His recent EP ’64 Bits & Malachite’ reflects upon his Congolese roots and the political struggles of his people while also being a joyous celebration of black dance music culture.

Cloudspotting Sundays are gloriously chilled days reflected by a more acoustic edge to the music programme. With that in mind, we are chuffed to bits to welcome one of our favourite acts of festivals past: THIS IS THE KITto headline. This Is The Kit (the recording name of Kate Stables) built something of a cult following since her 2008 debut, but 2015’s ‘Bashed Out’, produced by The National’s Aaron Dressner, saw the band reach out to a new audience.  This record earned heaps of acclaim, not least from Elbow’s Guy Garvey, who made it his ‘Record of the year’ on BBC 6Music.  This is the Kit performed at Cloudspotting a couple of months after that record and this year will be no different with This is The Kit’s eagerly awaited follow-up album set for the spring.

Other confirmed acts for Friday night include a rare full band show from DJ Woody a world champion DMC turntablist turned producer, who’s recent debut album ‘The Point of Contact’ united flavours of hip-hop, soul and jazz-rock into an explosive blend.

Following the recent release of his debut instrumental LP ‘The Wrecking Place’, we welcome The Earlies’ composer and keyboard wizard Christian Madden with his band to the main stage along with another Cloudspotting debut from Indigo Rose the new project from singer-songwriter Hannah Spurgeon.

We have a very special Friday night Lawn Stage headliner still to announce but are thrilled to welcome the Big Eyes Family Players, All Hail Hyena and a solo slot from Matthew Whitaker, following the release of his brilliant album ‘The Man with the Anvil Hat’, to Gisburn Forest for the first time.

Other confirmed acts on Saturday include Gulp, the wonderful Welsh garage space-pop band fronted by Guto Pryce (Super Furry Animals) and Lindsey Leven; The Wave Pictures, popular and prolific London-based trio who are fast becoming alternate year residents, and Manchester’s excellent Horsebeach who release their 3rd LP ‘Beauty and Sadness’, next month.

On Sunday, we are thrilled to confirm The Breath – the brainchild of ex-Cinematic Orchestra guitarist Stuart McCallum and fronted by one of our favourite vocalists, Rioghnach Connolly (of Honeyfeet fame).  Their debut album ‘Carry Your Kin’ was one of our highlights of 2016.

Singer, composer and all round hugely talented artist Hannah Peel is also confirmed to perform on Sunday night.  Her incredible 2016 album ‘Awake But Always Dreaming’ was awarded the No.1 Album of the Year by The Electronic Sound Magazine.

Please see our poster for the full list of confirmed acts.  More exceptional artists to be added very soon, but we trust this will get the tastebuds going.

Stay close for further line-up and activity announcements.

Cloudspotting Festival xx
